On January 7, 1930, the company of Ervin-West Construction Co., Inc. was formed by P.S. West of Statesville, NC and Carl W. Ervin of Catawba, NC. After several years, during which time Mr. Ervin did the estimating and Mr. West did the supervision and building. Mr. Ervin left the company and Mr. West took over the sole management. Mr. West changed the name of the company to PS West Construction Co., Inc. in 1939, and operated the company with the help of his son, J. Roscoe, who graduated from NC State College with a BS degree in Civil Engineering, Construction. In the meantime PS West's other three sons, S. Eugene, R.C. and Fred were active in the firm as superintendents.
The early years of the company focused on establishing the reputation that it still maintains today: building quality buildings and lasting relationships that stand the test of time. Starting in the 1930's, PS West Construction Company grew with Statesville and the surrounding area, working for the prominent developers and architects of the time. During the Second World War the firm did work for the Army Corps of Engineers at Morris Field, Camp Hoffman, Fort Bragg, Blumenthal Air Base, Camp Davis and Fort Fisher. The firm also built housing projects during the war in Charlotte, High Point, Raleigh, Tarboro, and Jacksonville in North Carolina, Spartanburg in South Carolina, and Savannah in Georgia.
PS West passed away in 1959, and the management of the firm was shared by his four sons. Following the passing of Fred West in 1972, and R.C West in 1973 the company was passed to the third Generation of the family Roy C West Jr., and Julian R. West Jr.
In the 1980’s RC’s son, Roy and Roscoe’s son, Julian, took over operations and eventually bought out most of the other relatives. In the early 1990’s Roy bought out Julian and became the sole owner. In 2015, Roy took on Michael Clark and Tammy Wyatt as partners in the company to help with its management.
Over its years in operation the Company has constructed many types of buildings in a wide range of territory. During the Second World War the firm was very active in construction buildings for the US military at various locations up and down the East Coast. Many, many buildings were built in and around Statesville that remain in use today. Mitchell Community College Library, The Wachovia building which is now the Griffin Insurance building, First Citizens Bank, Home Savings and Loan which is now a BB&T bank, the new Post Office and the Statesville Country Club are a few examples.
Several Company employees have been with the firm for decades. Bill Brendle, currently a senior project manager joined the firm in the early 1970’s and his brother, Ken joined the firm in 1983 and is also a senior project manager. Many of the field superintendents and other employees have 20 years or more of tenure. This longevity has enabled the Company to maintain a very good reputation for its outstanding expertise and excellent quality. With this experience and the long-term relationships with local subcontractors, architects and engineers, we have the capability to construct almost any type of building, upfit, industrial feature, offices, retail and medical facilities.
PS West Construction Co., Inc. would like to take this occasion to thank all our employees (current, past and retired), our subcontractors, vendors and our wonderful clients for a successful 90 years and hopefully for many more.
PS West today remains a family business. The company’s third president, Roy C West Jr. is grandson of the founder. The company strives to produce an excellence in construction that is rare, and where quality is never sacrificed in favor of speed or cost. Quality work at competitve prices is the achievement of PS West Construction Co., Inc. Over its 90 year existence, PS West has developed the ability to design, estimate, manage, and construct almost any building with a staff that has been trained the best way, through experience.
